Local 9 History
In 2007, Local 9 will celebrate its 30th anniversary as a
Charter Local Union in the United Association. Although
thirty years seems quite young as far as the labor movement
is concerned, the original locals that comprised Local 9
date back to the early part of the Twentieth Century.
In the mid 1970’s, the United Association looked at the
Locals that were chartered for our geographic area, central
New Jersey, and made the decision to merge the existing six
Local Unions into one. The territories at that time were:
Local #432 New Brunswick, Local #270 Perth Amboy, Local #380
Princeton, Local #181 Red Bank, Local #331 Asbury Park, and
Local #236 Trenton. Prior to the new charter being assigned,
the Officers of the Local at that time petitioned the United
Association to assign our area the lowest unused number
available. The impetus behind this request was to avoid any
bias and to begin this new venture as harmoniously as
possible. The UA complied with this request and Local #9 was
born on June 28, 1977.
Today, Local 9 represents over 2,500 highly skilled Plumbers,
Pipefitters, Welders, and HVAC/R service technicians not
only throughout the central New Jersey area, but also
throughout the entire footprint of our country. In addition
to this localized manpower pool, we have access to over
330,000 other skilled professionals that are affiliated with
the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the
Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and
Canada, which originated on October 11, 1889.
Our Contractors and our Craftpersons are respected for their
QUALITY, SAFETY, and RELIABILITY. This is attributed to
performing high quality work, on time and within budget. We
earn our reputation ONE JOB at a time and we take pride in
EVERY JOB we do. |
